Pershing was addressing the U.S. Army which was in France. My uncle Chilibi "Charlie" Yerushalmi was in France fighting too, but he was a Turk who left Rhodes and went to France, like many young Sephardim to fight in the war. Many held an alliegance to France, because the French offered the young Jews hope for an education.
