Statement
to New York's District 9 Voters in regard to the failed
leadership
of our representative, Congressman Anthony Weiner
(D-NY)

Dear
Voters of NY's 9th District,
New York's 9th District Congressional Representative,
Anthony Weiner, has involved himself in an indiscretion
involving a suggestive picture sent from his Twitter
account to the Twitter account of a young woman. Although
this unfortunate incident has been a dream come true
for late night comedians, it is no laughing matter
for the citizens of New York City and its 9th
District.
We
are facing an unprecedented economic situation. A
historic number of our citizens are unemployed, and
we are on the edge of a health care crisis. In addition
to our domestic issues, terrorism and three wars are
daily news items.
As the sound of laughter grew, our Congressional voice
was silenced. Those voters who valued power and experience
and believed those qualities insured that the needs
of the voters in New York's 9th District would be
taken seriously in the U.S. Congress, have suddenly
discovered the significance of integrity and respectability.
There is no litmus test for virtue, and the voters
cannot and should not involve themselves in issues
of a private nature. However, voters do deserve a
Representative who honors their trust with responsible
public behavior. Sadly, the situation is not only
a private disaster for Representative Weiner, it is
also a public and political disaster for New York's
9th District.
How can the people of New York's 9th District be fairly
represented by a man who is held in public contempt?
How can I be assured that my voice, as well as the
voice of neighbors and friends, are taken seriously
in the halls of the U.S. Congress, when Anthony Weiner
is my Representative?
We cannot stand idol as our voices are silenced, our
issues are ignored, and our questions go unanswered.
We deserve more than punch line and a rim shot. We
are working people, business leaders, shop owners,
teachers, children, parents, veterans, and pensioners.
We are government workers and social workers, doctors,
nurses, students and taxicab drivers. We send our
hard-earned taxes to Washington D.C. and we depend
upon our 9th District representative to have a voice
in how those taxes are spent, how our laws are made,
and how we are protected as U.S. citizens.
Integrity
matters. Honor matters. Respect matters. We matter.
We
are not a footnote in Anthony Weiners life,
but he is a footnote in ours. We need to get back
to business, and Anthony Weiner is a distraction.
Please, Representative Weiner, step down. If the 9th
District is as important as you say we are, do what
is best for us. If this does not occur, I, like many
others, would look forward to a Special Election being
called for New York's 9th District.
Sincerely,
Shelomo Alfassa
